Immunoperoxidase staining can be used to ascertain the diagnosis in
cases where uncertainty exists. This photomicrograph illustrates the typical
staining appearance of herpes simplex virus involvement of the liver allograft.
In our experience, monoclonal antibodies used to stain herpes simplex
type 1 frequently cross-react with those used to recognize the type 2 virus.
