Severe preservation injury can often be detected in biopsies
obtained within only a few hours after transplantation. In this
photomicrograph, note the periportal and perivenular congestion,
hemorrhage, necrosis and neutrophilic inflammation. The combination
of hepatocyte necrosis and severe neutrophilic inflammation in the
areas of necrosis, signal a severe preservation-related injury,
particularly if they are detected in the periportal region.
