Recurrent cirrhosis because of chronic type B viral hepatitis in an
allograft rarely if ever results in a macronodular pattern. Instead the
cirrhosis that develops assumes a micronodular appearance. This may be related
to several changes in the pathogenesis of cirrhosis induced by immunosuppression
and MHC mismatching. Compare this cirrhotic liver to the one shown in Figure L,
which is the original or native liver removed at the time of the initial liver
transplant. It shows a macronodular cirrhosis.
