The surgical bed of the renal allograft undergoes fibrosis during the
first several weeks after transplantation. The formation of a pseudocapsule
by this mechanism causes obliteration of the penetrating vessels supplying
the outer renal cortex. In superficial biopsies, the resulting interstitial
fibrosis and tubular atrophy can be confused with chronic allograft nephropathy.
