There are alternating areas of pancreatic acinar parenchyma and connective tissue septa containing small vessels and duct branches. A sample containing 2-4 acinar areas and 2 or more septal areas is adequate for diagnosis. Ducts are present in 90% of biopsies, arteries and veins in 85-90% of biopsies and islets in 75% of biopsies.
