Moderate Acute Rejection

In moderate acute rejection, the inflammatory infiltrate is widely dispersed within the lamina propria. Crypt injury and cryptitis are distributed more diffusely than in mild acute rejection, and the villi tend to have a greater degree of flattening. The number of apoptotic bodies is greater than in mild acute rejection usually with focal "confluent apoptosis". Mild to moderate intimal arteritis may be seen. However the mucosa remains intact without ulceration, although focal superficial erosions can be present.
