Figure 5. This low power photomicrograph shows mild patchy mononuclear portal inflammation that is arranged into nodular aggregates, which often surround small bile ducts. Although it cannot be seen at this magnification, the portal inflammation usually persists as long as there are remaining biliary epithelial cells. Once all of the biliary epithelium is destroyed, the inflammation subsides.
