In contrast to cold preservation, which preferentially damages the
sinusoidal endothelium, a warm ischemic insult more selectively
damages the hepatocytes. In this photomicrograph, note the presence
of centrilobular microvesicular steatosis, which is a fairly
common
finding in liver allograft biopsies in the peri-operative period. It
usually signals a warm ischemic insult, but can also be seen with
injuries related to drugs and toxins.
