Figure 1. Mild lymphoplasmacytic portal inflammation is usually, but not always, seen during the early phases of chronic rejection. Before the bile ducts are destroyed, severe bile duct damage is evident. It is characterized by eosinophilic transformation of the cytoplasmic and irregular nuclear spacing(arrow). Subendothelial infiltration of the portal vein(PV) is not a typical feature of chronic rejection.
