Figure 3. Overproduction of the B virus is thought to be directly cytopathy in some liver allograft recipients, who develop this type of liver injury. The right side of the photomicrograph shows marked hepatocyte swelling and degeneration in the centrilobular zones with central-to-central and focal portal-to-central bridging collapse. The left side of the photomicrograph shows the HBcAg stain on the same specimen. Note the co-localization of the nuclear and cytoplasmic HBcAg to the degenerating hepatocytes.
