This section was taken from a presensitized recipient, 24 hours after transplantation. The titer of preformed antibodies was high enough to affect the rejection process, but not so high as to cause immediate graft failure. Note that the sinusoids are now open and that the Kupffer's cells contain numerous phagosomes, some of which also show platelet granules and other breakdown products. Compare this image to the image captured 10 minutes after transplantation. This illustrates at least one of the mechanisms used by the liver to protect itself from the effects of preformed antibody injury. |
