The staining pattern of tumor cell membranes was classified as score 0 when negative or unspecific (A), score 1 if the staining was weak and incomplete in more than 10% of tumor cells (B), score 2 if moderate and complete staining was detectable in more than 10% of the tumor cells (C), and score 3 if more than 10% of the tumor cells displayed strong and complete membrane staining (D).
