Figure 4. Acute tubular necrosis can be accompanied by extramedullary hematopoiesis. Several immature red cells with a pink hemoglobinized cytoplasm can be seen in this figure. An adjacent glomerulus shows neutrophil infiltration, capillary congestion and mesangiolysis reflecting ischaemic injury.
