A high power magnification of a large muscular artery from the hilum of the
liver shows intimal foam cells accumulation that results in intimal(I)
thickening. There are also foam cells in the media(M) and small foam cells
and macrophages lined-up along the adventitia of the artery(A, arrow).
Interestingly, some investigators have suggested that inflammatory cells
originating from the adventitia of the artery can invade the media and intima,
in an "outside-in" fashion.
