The inflammatory infiltrate comprises both
CD4+ (left) and CD8+ T-cells (right), as demonstrated by
appropriate immunostains. These stains are helpful in
demonstrating the character of the lymphocytes, but they
are not generally useful in distinguishing acute
rejection from other differential diagnostic
considerations. Note that the CD8+ cells are the
predominant cell within the crypt epithelium, reflecting
the CD8+ nature of normal intraepithelial lymphocytes.
