Figure 3. The consequence of transplanting a donor liver with severe steatosis is shown in this photomicrograph. This sample was obtained within several hours after transplantation from the organ shown in the previous two frames. Normal ischemic/reperfusion injury lead to lysis of individual steatotic cells, and subsequent formation of large extracellular fat globules, disruption of the hepatic microcirculation, and produce focal areas of parenchymal necrosis. This graft was excised within 24 hours of transplantation for "primary non-function".
